The artists in the Chimera collective ensemble are all master musicians, innovators, composers, and improvisers. They have deeply immersed themselves in various musical streams, including avant-garde jazz, Indian raga, Moravian folk music, overtone singing, as well as both early and modern European classical music and American folk.
Individually, they have performed with a stunning array of influential creative artists, such as Fred Frith, Bang on a Can All-Stars, ETHEL, Paul Winter, Jack DeJohnette, Paul Simon, David Hykes, Pauline Oliveros, Bill Frisell, Matthew Shipp, Tani Tabbal, and Joe McPhee, to name just a few.
As they enter the shared space to create music together, they leave their individual experiences and backgrounds at the door, coming together with a deep respect for each other's perspectives. This collaboration anticipates fresh expressions of deep emotion, awestruck beauty, and sheer delight. Together, they explore new territory to create music that defies description.
Iva Bittová works across a range of musical genres, including jazz, rock, classical, and opera. Deciding on a name for her style of music remains an ongoing challenge. Every day life has always inspired her music and interpretations, drawing from total silence and a positive atmosphere.
Steve Gorn is known for his flute playing, which has been described as capable of "re-aligning the cells." He combines the essence of classical Indian tradition with a contemporary world music sensibility. Gorn is featured on the Grammy-winning recording "Miho – Journey to the Mountain" with the Paul Winter Consort, as well as in the Academy Award-winning documentary film "Born into Brothels."
Singer, guitarist, and composer Timothy Hill weaves a natural purity of voice with threads of otherworldly abstract sound, blending seamlessly into a style that transcends genre. He appears on numerous recordings with David Hykes and the Harmonic Choir, including the seminal "Hearing Solar Winds." The New York Times has called Hill “a virtuoso of the Tibetan chanting technique.”
Bassist, improviser, and composer Michael Bisio has been described as a poet and a wonder, as well as one of the most virtuosic and imaginative performers on the double bass. With over 140 recordings to his name, including more than two dozen as a leader or co-leader, Michael continues to grow and evolve within the tradition, striving to move it forward.
